Old Lorettonian Golfing Society

Welcome to The Old Lorettonian Golfing Society. Founded in 1929, the society operates separately from the Lorettonian Society with its own constitution and Committee. All Old Lorettonians, whatever their golfing ability, are eligible to join and we currently have approximately 350 members plus 6 Honorary and Honorary Life Members.

The Society’s aim is to provide a range of golfing events for Old Lorettonians to enjoy. These range from our Scratch team playing in prestigious national competitions such as the Halford Hewitt, to high handicap players being able to participate in friendly but competitive competitions and matches against other golf societies. The term ‘serious fun’ as a description of what golf can offer was coined some hundred years ago but it very much sums up the Society’s approach to all its events whether they are elite scratch competitions, or friendly handicap matches.

For many younger members in particular who are unable for whatever reason to join a golf club, the Society offers affordable access to golf. We are privileged to have fixtures at many prestigious courses such as Muirfield and Prestwick in Scotland and Worplesdon, West Sussex, and Denham in the south-east of England. Participating in Society matches is a good way of not only playing at these clubs, but also of meeting other club members - many OLGS members have subsequently joined these clubs.

Loretto has supplied more captains of the R&A than any other school as well as countless R&A committee members as well as Captains of golf clubs throughout the country. The Society was closely involved in the setting up of, and fundraising for, the Loretto Golf Academy.

The links between the Society and the Academy continue to flourish with regular joint events and Academy graduates now form the backbone of the OLGS scratch teams competing at the Halford Hewitt, the Grafton Morrish, the Queen Elizabeth Trophy, the Stenhouse Quaich and the Silver Tassie.

The success of the Golf Academy has begun to bear fruits for the OLGS with Loretto winning the prestigious Halford Hewitt tournament for the first time in 2021 and then successfully defending the trophy in 2022 and 2023. In 2024 Loretto won the Grafton Morrish, also for the first time, and followed this up with victory in the Stenhouse Quaich in 2025.

The OLGS is also developing its ladies’ section and this was boosted considerably by Loretto winning the Silver Tassie, the main Ladies national competition for school alumnae, at The Berkshire in 2024. It was Loretto’s first appearance in the tournament and the team won both the handicap Silver Tassie and the scratch cup.

All leavers can enrol into the Society for free until the age of 30. All Society members under 30 receive heavy discounts on all golf events. The annual subscription is just £50.

We finally win the Grafton Morrisish....

Played for the first time in 1963, the GM is different from the HH in many ways. Played over the fabulous Hunstanton, and the idiosyncratic Royal West Norfolk (Brancaster), 164 schools are eligible to take part. Qualifiers take place in the summer and 48 teams of 6 arrived on the north Norfolk coast in late October.

For more details of how the team overcame some shocking weather conditions (40mph winds!) and some funereally slow play, please read Andrew's October news letter below.

Loretto make it a hat-trick!!

After successfully defending in 2022, Loretto made it a hat-trick of victories in 2023 to become only the second school to win three in a row since the tournament expanded to 64 schools in 1958. (Charterhouse won from 1982-84).
